What to do when you hit the cap
You have three real options. Compress the file if it is uncompressed (a CSV, a PSD, source code). Split it into parts with 7-Zip and have the recipient rejoin them. Or send a link.
quik.space is shaped for the third option. Drop the file, get a link in seconds, paste it into the email instead of the attachment. Free up to 100 MB, $1 up to 500 MB, $5 up to 5 GB. No signup, no monthly subscription.
Drop a file
Skip the limit. Drop your file here.
A share link works in every email provider, no matter the attachment cap.

Why does Gmail say 25 MB but I sometimes see 20?
25 MB is the documented limit on the sending side. The recipient's server can be stricter. If the receiving domain caps incoming mail at 20 MB, your 24 MB attachment will bounce back even though Gmail accepted it. The safe number to plan around is the smaller of the two limits.
Why does the attachment look fine on my computer but get rejected?
Most mail servers encode binary attachments in Base64, which adds about 33 percent to the size on the wire. A 20 MB file on disk becomes roughly 27 MB once attached. Provider documentation almost always refers to the encoded size, not the file on disk.
Can I split a file across multiple emails?
Mechanically yes, with a tool like 7-Zip or split on Linux. The recipient has to rejoin the parts in the right order, which is fragile. A single share link is faster, more reliable, and does not depend on the recipient running command-line tools.
Why is iCloud Mail at 20 MB but Apple shows me 5 GB?
iCloud Mail attachments cap at 20 MB. Anything bigger gets handed to Mail Drop, which uploads the file to iCloud and inserts a download link in the email. Mail Drop links live for 30 days and count against your iCloud storage if the file is larger than what your free tier covers.
Do these limits change?
Yes, slowly. The biggest swings tend to come from messaging apps adding video tiers. Email providers have not raised their caps in years because spam and malware filters get harder past 25 to 50 MB. We refresh this table when a major provider changes a limit, with the last-updated date at the top.
What's the simplest workaround when the file is too big?
Send a link instead of an attachment. quik.space gives you a share link in seconds, free up to 100 MB, paid one-shot for files up to 5 GB. No signup, no ads, no AI training on your files.
