How to send an Ableton Live set.

An Ableton .als file is tiny, but the project folder with samples, frozen tracks, and Max for Live patches is the part that matters. quik.space stores the zipped project byte-for-byte. The recipient unpacks and opens the set with every reference intact.

What is a Ableton Live Set?

Ableton Live Set files use the .als extension with no single standard MIME type. The format sits in the audio category. Typical files run 5 MB - 50 MB (set only), which is well above what most email services will accept as an attachment.

Why you can’t email a Ableton Live Set

An ALS file is small on its own, but the full project folder with samples and frozen tracks can hit several gigabytes. Email won't carry the project archive.Slack, Discord, and most other workplace tools have similar caps, often around 1 GB for free tiers and with aggressive per-channel storage limits. Even when the file fits, it counts against the recipient’s mailbox quota forever.

How quik.space handles Ableton Live Set

quik.space takes a zipped Ableton project (set + samples + freeze files) byte-for-byte. The recipient unpacks, opens the .als, and every clip lines up because the relative paths inside the zip survive. The share page renders an inline HTML5 audio player, so the recipient streams the file before downloading the original.

The file lives for 72 hours by default and then enters a 7-day grace period. We do not train AI on your files. We do not share them with third parties. After grace, the bytes are permanently purged from storage. Read the full policy on privacy.

Frequently asked

Should I send just the .als or the whole project folder?
Send the whole project folder, zipped. Ableton needs the Samples folder, freeze files, and any user library content to open without missing media warnings.
Will Max for Live patches travel with the set?
If you collected all (File > Collect All and Save), yes. Otherwise the recipient needs the same M4L devices installed.
What if the project zip is over 5 GB?
Bounce frozen tracks down to flat audio first, or strip unused samples with Ableton's Project Manager.
Can the recipient open the ALS without Ableton?
No, the ALS is a proprietary Ableton format. The recipient needs Ableton Live installed.
