How to send a NEF file.
NEF is Nikon's RAW format. The files are too big for email and too valuable to trust to a service that might re-compress. quik.space takes the NEF byte-for-byte and gives the recipient a download link that opens cleanly in any NEF editor.

What is a Nikon NEF RAW?
Nikon NEF RAW files use the .nef extension with no single standard MIME type. The format sits in the image category. Typical files run 20 MB - 80 MB per shot, which is well above what most email services will accept as an attachment.
Why you can’t email a Nikon NEF RAW
A Nikon Z9 NEF is 30 to 60 MB per shot. A full event card is 100 GB or more. Gmail's 25 MB attachment cap is irrelevant.Slack, Discord, and most other workplace tools have similar caps, often around 1 GB for free tiers and with aggressive per-channel storage limits. Even when the file fits, it counts against the recipient’s mailbox quota forever.
How quik.space handles Nikon NEF RAW
quik.space stores the NEF container with its embedded JPEG preview intact. The recipient downloads it and opens it in Capture NX-D, Lightroom, or any NEF-capable editor. The share page renders a full-size inline preview, so the recipient sees the image immediately and downloads the original at full resolution.
The file lives for 72 hours by default and then enters a 7-day grace period. We do not train AI on your files. We do not share them with third parties. After grace, the bytes are permanently purged from storage. Read the full policy on privacy.

Frequently asked
- Are NEF files compressed in storage?
- We do not compress. The bytes you upload are the bytes the recipient downloads.
- Is the camera profile preserved?
- Yes. NEF metadata, picture controls, embedded preview, all intact.
- Can I send 25 NEFs at once?
- Yes, with a $2 bulk upload. Or zip a folder of NEFs first.
- Will Capture NX-D open the file after?
- Yes. Capture NX-D and Lightroom both read the file as if it had not moved.
