How to send a DWG file.
DWG is the language of AutoCAD. A real project package, with xrefs, fonts, and embedded raster, is large. quik.space takes the eTransmit zip byte-for-byte. The recipient unzips and opens the DWG with every reference intact.

What is a AutoCAD DWG?
AutoCAD DWG files use the .dwg extension and the image/vnd.dwg MIME type. The format sits in the 3d category. Typical files run 1 MB - 500 MB, which is well above what most email services will accept as an attachment.
Why you can’t email a AutoCAD DWG
Architectural DWG files with full building documentation, xrefs, and embedded images often run 100 to 500 MB. Email rejects them; some firms hit per-channel SharePoint caps.Slack, Discord, and most other workplace tools have similar caps, often around 1 GB for free tiers and with aggressive per-channel storage limits. Even when the file fits, it counts against the recipient’s mailbox quota forever.
How quik.space handles AutoCAD DWG
quik.space takes the DWG byte-for-byte. Xref structure is preserved if you eTransmit (AutoCAD's package-the-project tool) the file first. Otherwise the DWG opens with xref warnings. The share page does not render 3D scenes inline. The recipient downloads the file and opens it in the matching DCC.
The file lives for 72 hours by default and then enters a 7-day grace period. We do not train AI on your files. We do not share them with third parties. After grace, the bytes are permanently purged from storage. Read the full policy on privacy.
Common use cases
- Send a finished DWG to a structural engineer
- Hand off an architectural set to a contractor
- Share a site plan DWG with a surveyor
- Backup a critical DWG before a major design change
Frequently asked
- Should I use eTransmit before sending?
- Yes. eTransmit packages the DWG with all xrefs, fonts, and embedded images. Zip the eTransmit output and upload.
- Will my DWG open in older AutoCAD versions?
- DWG has version compatibility. Save as an older format before sending if you know the recipient uses an older version.
- What about layer states and viewports?
- Preserved. The DWG is byte-identical.
- Can the recipient open DWG without AutoCAD?
- Yes. Many DWG viewers exist (Autodesk DWG TrueView is free, BricsCAD reads DWG, LibreCAD supports older versions).
