How to send an OBJ file.

OBJ is the universal 3D handoff format, but it almost never travels alone. You need the .obj, the .mtl, and every texture map. quik.space takes the zipped bundle byte-for-byte and gives the recipient a clean import.

What is a OBJ 3D model?

OBJ 3D model files use the .obj extension and the model/obj MIME type. The format sits in the 3d category. Typical files run 1 MB - 500 MB, which is well above what most email services will accept as an attachment.

Why you can’t email a OBJ 3D model

OBJ files plus their MTL material file and texture maps can run hundreds of megabytes. Email rejects anything large, and OBJ workflows always involve at least 3 related files.Slack, Discord, and most other workplace tools have similar caps, often around 1 GB for free tiers and with aggressive per-channel storage limits. Even when the file fits, it counts against the recipient’s mailbox quota forever.

How quik.space handles OBJ 3D model

quik.space takes a zipped OBJ + MTL + textures bundle byte-for-byte. The recipient unzips and imports the OBJ into Blender, Maya, Cinema 4D, or any DCC. Material links resolve because the relative paths inside the zip survive. The share page does not render 3D scenes inline. The recipient downloads the file and opens it in the matching DCC.

The file lives for 72 hours by default and then enters a 7-day grace period. We do not train AI on your files. We do not share them with third parties. After grace, the bytes are permanently purged from storage. Read the full policy on privacy.

Frequently asked

Should I send the .obj alone or the whole folder?
Send the whole folder zipped. OBJ references an MTL, which references texture files. Without the bundle, materials show as missing.
Will normals and UVs survive?
Yes. The OBJ ASCII format is preserved byte-for-byte.
Can the recipient import into Blender?
Yes. Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, Cinema 4D, Houdini, ZBrush, all read OBJ.
What about animation in OBJ?
OBJ does not store animation. Use FBX or USD if you need rigged or animated geometry.
